Autonomous maintenance

One of the opportunities that manufacturers have to positively influence their OEE is autonomous maintenance. This first step towards Total Productive Maintenance asks operators to take ownership over equipment by monitoring the assets, make adjustments and perform basic maintenance tasks such as safety checks, lubrication and cleaning of the machines. Autonomous maintenance frees up maintenance personnel for other tasks, helps with decreasing unplanned downtime as issues can be noticed sooner which can avoid critical failure. In addition, it improves internal collaboration as operations and maintenance will work more closely together. It must be said that autonomous maintenance can also be quite challenging as it usually requires a completely different mindset and work process.

Dependency on OEMs

When a discrete manufacturer is not a tier 1 company, chances are that they do not have their own maintenance department. This makes a manufacturer dependent on the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) who often in those cases supply the maintenance and asset management needed. This means that all knowledge and expertise is outside of the organization. This dependency on the supplier makes a manufacturer vulnerable.

Industry 4.0 can be perceived as a challenge and as an opportunity. It is often seen as a challenge because it is not easy to get beyond the pilot stage and realize lasting performance improvements.
