Preventive Maintenance (PM) can be described as any work or maintenance activity carried out on equipment to avoid failure. Thus, the main objective of any preventive maintenance program is to either mitigate the consequences of the failure or detect the presence of an impending failure.
In today’s industry, however, it is very common for PM programs to be based walk-downs, time-driven replacement of parts, or “inspect and replace if necessary”. Running a PM program based on any of these philosophies can be quite costly, highly inefficient, and often create a level of mistrust and uncertainty on your operations.
